The London English Song Festival returns to Wilton’s Music Hall from 18 to 20 July 2017 with Over There!
This dramatic, staged performance of song and poetry, commemorates the American entry into Great War and depicts the colliding worlds of England and the United States through an compelling exploration of song and the spoken word.
This year, the festival organisers are delighted to be able to invite Chelsea Pensioner, former soldier, actor, singer and narrator, William K. Gorrie to read a moving and poignant selection of poetry. The inclusion of ‘Bill’ Gorrie, adds, say organisers, an interesting dynamic to the festival.
Over There! takes its name from the famous song of composed in 1917 by George M. Cohan, the song that encouraged young Americans to sign up to fight in the battlefields of Europe. In an immersive dramatic experience that explores the artistic legacy of that period, both in America and Britain, the London English Song Festival explores a compelling selection of art songs, popular songs and poetry from that year.
In addition to the main shows, two educational matinees for children will be performed which aim to, through live performance and discussion artistic, engage children with the legacy of the war poets and composers. These modified performances will include a talk on the historical background of the historical events and a Q&A with the performers.
The performers this year are:
William K. Gorrie – reader
Katie Bray – mezzo-soprano
Nick Pritchard – tenor
Craig Colclough – bass-baritone
Louise Williams – viola
William Vann – piano
A fascinating selection of contemporary photographs and Woodrow Wilson’s declaration of war will frame a staged performance given by three of the finest singers of their generation, each accompanied by William Vann, Artistic Director of the London English Song Festival and award-winning pianist.
