News: Golden Somme Storyteller

Published 20 December 2016, 09:38

Adding the final touches to the unique Somme Poppy Pins.

Unique golden poppy pin tells the story of sacrifice made at the Somme

2016 marked the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, the First World Wars bloodiest battle, which lasted from the 1 July until 18 November 1916 and claimed the lives or injured more than a million men.

To help commemorate the ultimate sacrifice made by so many individuals The Legion have created a very special Poppy Pin.

The intricate gold coloured pins, which feature the engraving Somme 1916 on their reverse, are made from the brass of melted down shells found on the Somme battlefields and feature a prominent red centre, the paint for which has been mixed with soil handpicked from the fields.

The soil and nature of the metal used to create the pins means no two are identical, which is far from coincidental. Each represents one of the soldiers killed in the Battle, helping remind us that behind the numbers were real people, people just like us, sons, husbands, fathers, and amazing stories of comradeship and courage.
Production story: shells and soil collected from the Somme battle fields, brass melted down and poured into casts, soil melted with paint, each and every pin is hand finished.

To emphasize this important point each pin comes with a certificate detailing specifics of the individual soldier it helps commemorate and directs you to where you can find more information. If you know a specific person who lost their live during the Somme you can request a corresponding certificate, enabling you to have a very poignant reminder of their sacrifice or give an especially meaningful gift this Christmas.

Whilst commemorating the sacrifices made in the past, the pins also help those serving today and all proceeds raised from their sale through The Poppy Shop (www.poppyshop.org.uk) go directly to The Royal British Legion and the important work they do in providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces and their families.

Also available, and made using the same materials and methods, is a stylish set of high quality Somme 1916 Poppy Cufflinks (please note, these dont come with a certificate).
