Photo of the Week – Farnborough in 1955

(Key Collection)

A general view of the aircraft displays at the SBAC Farnborough Airshow in 1955.

Starting with the bigger aircraft in the background, far left is an Avro Ashton experimental jet airliner, masked by the twin tail fins of an Avro Shackleton, itself masked by the unmistakable Avro Vulcan V-bomber. On the far side of the Vulcan’s cockpit we can just see the unusual engine pods of a prototype Short Sperrin jet. In the centre is a BOAC Comet 3 and on the far side of that is a triple-finned Avro Ambassador testing Napier engines. By the Comet’s left wingtip is the prototype Handley Page Herald that was fitted with four piston engines, and on the right of the photo is one of the two prototypes for the Victor V-bomber.

The front row of smaller aircraft shows, from far left, a Fairey Gannet, a Gloster Javelin, one of only two Fairey FD2s, the Folland Midge and three Hawker Hunters, the white one being the prototype two-seat trainer.
